Denture Care Instructions
How do I care for my dentures?
- Remove and rinse dentures after eating. Run water over dentures to remove food debris and other loose particles. You may want to place a towel on the counter, in the sink, or put some water in the sink so the dentures do not break if you drop them.
- Handle your dentures carefully. Refrain from bending or damaging any clasps when cleaning.
- Clean your mouth after removing your dentures by using a soft bristle toothbrush on natural teeth, tongue, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth. You may develop stains from coffee, tea, and chewing tobacco.
- Brush your dentures twice daily. Gently clean dentures by soaking and brushing with a non-abrasive denture cleanser to remove food, plaque, and other deposits. If denture adhesive is used, clean the areas in which that the adhesive was applied. Do not use denture cleanser inside of the mouth.
- Soak Dentures overnight. Most types of dentures need to remain moist to keep their shape. Place dentures in water or a mild denture soaking solution. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on cleansing and soaking solutions.
- Always rinse dentures before placing them back inside of the mouth. These solutions can contain chemicals that may cause vomiting, burning and/or pain if swallowed.
- Schedule regular check-ups. Your dentist will advise you about how often to visit to have your dentures examined and to ensure a proper fit to prevent slippage and discomfort. Your dentist should also check the inside of your mouth to make sure it is healthy.
- Loose/Tight fit of denture. See your dentist promptly should your dentures become loose or too tight. If this happens you may develop sores, irritation, and/or infection.
Things to avoid:
- Abrasive cleaning materials including whitening toothpaste. Avoid stiff-bristled brushes, strong cleansers, and harsh toothpaste as these may damage your denture.
- Products that contain chlorine (bleach). Do not use any bleaching products because these can weaken dentures and change the color of material. Please do not soak dentures or partials with any metal attachments in solutions that contain chlorine because it can cause corrosion and tarnish the metal.
- Hot water. Avoid hot or boiling water as it can possibly warp or disfigure your denture and the way it fits.
